Physical Therapy
Our Physical Therapists are experts in treating patients of all ages to reduce pain and improve function and mobility. As highly trained healthcare professionals, our therapists create personal treatment plans that are specific to the patient’s post-operative rehabilitation needs. Our rehabilitation services help patients progress towards returning to work and recreational activities while maintaining an optimal
level of health without risking further injury.
Pain Management
Dr. O’Keefe and Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. have the ability to provide expert pain management treatment. These non-surgical approaches to painful pathologic conditions are very effective. Often, patients do not have to take extended periods away from work duties while they undergo these pain management treatments. Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. and their staff closely communicate with employers about restricted duties that are safe and can actually promote the care the patient is undergoing. These treatments often allow the patients to get beyond a blocking combination of pain, stiffness, and weakness. Physical therapy and modalities are precisely utilized to help the patient convalesce with many of these conditions. The vast majority do not require extensive spinal surgery. The patient leaves Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation’s treatment course with a firm understanding of exercises and conditioning methods that will allow them to maximize daily and work function. One of the unique strengths of Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. is their devotion to the patient beyond the time of intensive treatment. Dr. O’Keefe and his staff try to tailor a work schedule and work duties that provide the patient with a reasonable chance of having many more years of productive work activities.
In the rare instances where surgical intervention is required, Dr. O’Keefe has skilled orthopedic spinal surgeons and neurosurgeons participating in patient care. These doctors utilize the most advanced techniques for spinal surgical management and have an extremely effective method of dealing with these pathologies.
Shoulder Injuries
Injuries about the shoulder could either involve strains as described above or sprains. Most of these are painful and limiting. Most can be treated with medication and an exercise regimen that allows the patients to return to full function and comfort. If surgery is required, Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. is expert at diagnosing this using objective testing such as x-ray, ultrasound-guided imaging, and MRI. The patient has been instructed on correct exercises and if the objective testing bears out that a complete tear is present, then it is known that conservative management will not cure the patient’s debility.

Knee Injuries
Knee injuries are very common. It’s the most common site for serious sports injuries. Sprains and strains occur. Expert medication management and physical therapy allow most of these to progress without the need for surgery. With expert clinical skills, Dr. O’Keefe can determine which patients are potentially surgical candidates. Precise and efficient testing confirms the diagnosis with such tests as x-ray, ultrasound-guided imaging techniques, and MRI. If surgery is required, many times arthroscopic surgery can be performed. Dr. O’Keefe has extensive skill in repair techniques for meniscal structures and reconstructive techniques for cruciate ligaments. Severe cartilage injuries can be managed now with cell culture techniques called membranous autologous chondrocyte implantation(MACI) procedures. The patient’s own cells are cultured and the articular cartilage can actually be restored with this advanced surgical technique.

Strains
Muscles get strained. This is when an exertion is too strong or a contusion damages some of the muscle unit. Medication may be useful initially to diminish inflammation or swelling as the patient works with an expert physical therapist to reacquire a functional arc of motion. As healing progresses and other diagnoses are excluded, strength gains can be made. Careful monitoring of activity, especially job activities, must occur if healing is to progress smoothly and rapidly.
Sprains
Sprains are ligament injuries. This tissue tends to be more like a canvas strap. Minor sprains involve a microscopic disruption of the ligament. Complete ruptures or Grade III injuries produce tremendous pain and instability and often require surgery. Happily, most injuries are Grade I or Grade II, and not the latter Grade III. These can be managed with medication, restricted activity, and therapy. Our goal at Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. is to maximize the patient’s recovery. It’s common for our patients to be stronger, more flexible, and have better stamina than prior to when they were injured. It’s our goal to teach the patients how to keep up this exercise regimen lifelong to promote a healthy, active lifestyle with fewer injuries.
Fractures
Dr. O’Keefe has been a trauma surgeon for over 25 years. He did a 5-year orthopedic residency at a 900 bed Level I trauma center in Peoria, IL. This was also the site for a center of excellence for sports medicine. Serious sports injuries and motorcycle injuries with complicated fractures were commonly handled. This training and Dr. O’Keefe’s continued devotion to maintaining “cutting-edge” operative skills with academic training, allows Marian Orthopedic & Rehabilitation Centers, S.C. to excel in difficult fracture management. We are a community provider capable of performing the surgeries on-site. Patients are not lost to the large hospital centers with their higher complication rates, including infection and medication/patient care management errors. Many of our acute care management protocols involve outpatient surgery combined with a well-coordinated home care plan. This avoids the difficulty and expensive of in-patient hospitalization.

Dr. O’Keefe extensively uses the most modern techniques to manage peri-operative patients. Dr. O’Keefe and his well-trained staff aggressively utilize early motion and strengthening techniques that are focused, permitting the patient to not only shorten postoperative pain and restrictions, but allow a more rapid return to having protective strength and comfortable function. Therapy is occurring on-site where Dr. O’Keefe is available that day to answer questions concerning patient care and therapy goals and progress.
